2-year-old in stable condition after being caught in barrage of gunfire in Houston’s Fourth Ward

Houston police are currently without a suspect description following an incident where a two-year-old boy was struck twice by heavy gunfire inside a residence in Fourth Ward on Friday evening, according to authorities.

Officers from the Houston Police Department responded to a shooting in the 1300 block of Gillette Street shortly before 8 p.m.

Upon arrival, police encountered a chaotic scene.

HPD stated that the young boy was playing outside while neighbors enjoyed the evening in their front yards.

According to police reports, multiple individuals observed four vehicles – a black car, a lifted black truck with a light bar, a silver car, and another unidentified vehicle – traveling northbound on Gillette and crossing onto Ruthven Street.

At that moment, at least 30 to 40 shots were fired as the cars passed by.

Tragically, the 2-year-old sustained injuries to the stomach and arm during the incident. The boy’s family quickly transported him to the hospital, where he is currently in stable condition.

HPD indicated that they are seeking at least two shooters, as casings from separate weapons were discovered, including some from a handgun and others from a rifle.

Initially categorized as a drive-by shooting, authorities are now exploring whether this was a shootout or if the shots originated from one of the vehicles.

“We really just don’t know if it’s a shooting between two groups in the vehicles or if they’re just driving by and shooting at the crowd,” said Exec. Asst. Chief Larry Satterwhite.

No additional injuries were reported.

Individuals with information regarding this case are encouraged to contact the Houston Police Department’s Major Assaults Division at (713) 308-3100.
