NFL free agency 2024: Texans lose tackle, sacks, and rushing leaders from 2023; also miss on Barkley

The commencement of the 2024 free-agency period in the NFL brought anticipation for the Houston Texans to make significant moves, given their ample salary cap space of $63 million, as reported by Spotrac. With promising young talents like C.J. Stroud, Tank Dell, and Dalton Schultz, the Texans were expected to pursue notable free agents, including Saquon Barkley.

However, expectations were met with disappointment as key players from the Texans’ previous AFC South championship team departed. Despite rumors linking Saquon Barkley to Houston, the running back chose the Philadelphia Eagles, signing a three-year, $37.75 million deal with incentives, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

In another unexpected turn, Devin Singletary, the incumbent RB1 for the Texans, reportedly agreed to join the New York Giants, replacing Barkley. Singletary’s deal with the Giants is reported to be a three-year contract worth $16.5 million.

The Texans faced further setbacks as their top defensive free agents, Jonathan Greenard and Blake Cashman, opted to sign with the Minnesota Vikings. Greenard secured a four-year, $72 million deal, while Cashman’s terms were yet to be confirmed.

On the special teams front, punter Cameron Johnston agreed to terms with the Pittsburgh Steelers, leaving a void for the Texans.

Despite these losses, the Texans made notable acquisitions to bolster their roster. Cornerback Jeff Okudah, a Grand Prairie native, returns to Texas on a one-year deal worth up to $6 million. Lonnie Johnson Jr., a former Texans cornerback, also rejoins the team on a one-year contract. Additionally, defensive end Denico Autry leaves the Titans to join Houston. Azeez Al-Shaair, previously with the 49ers and Titans, replaces Cashman at linebacker.

As the Texans navigate through the free-agency period, they aim to strengthen their roster and remain competitive in the upcoming season.
