Dallas Yarn Bombers turn Nasher Sculpture Center into enchanted forest

The Nasher Sculpture Center, renowned for its collection of contemporary and modern art, adds a touch of whimsy this week as the Dallas Yarn Bombers adorn trees in the sculpture garden with vibrant scarves and blankets.

Sally Ackerman, the ‘Head Knit Wit’ of the Dallas Yarn Bombers, expressed delight in seeing the knitting ascend the branches, envisioning the sculptures feeling uplifted by the colorful display. The yarn installation, initiated on Monday and scheduled for completion on Tuesday, coincides with spring break, welcoming younger visitors to the Nasher Sculpture Center.

“We aimed to infuse a theme into the lively atmosphere,” Ackerman remarked, gesturing towards the assortment of striped and textured pieces. “It’s simply joyful!”

Anna Smith, Curator of Education at the Nasher Sculpture Center, reminisced about the comfort of knitted blankets and sweaters from her childhood, describing the installation as a warm embrace amidst the garden’s tranquility.

Ackerman chimed in, highlighting the joy of embracing trees, especially when they’re adorned with cozy and beautiful attire.

The Dallas Yarn Bombers’ installation at the Nasher, debuting on March 13, marks 13 years since Ackerman’s inaugural yarn bomb—a journey that began with knitting a small sweater for a fire hydrant.

The transformation at the Nasher Sculpture Center offers a delightful spring break escape for locals, spreading happiness through the art of yarn bombing.

Amidst the festivities, the Nasher Sculpture Center extends free admission during spring break, with additional events like Midnight at the Nasher featuring free concerts and a screening of the movie Barbie on Friday.
