New changes to historic neighborhood in North Fort Worth raise concerns among residents

Changes are underway at 1332 N. Main St. in Fort Worth, as Transwestern undertakes the renovation of the old Mulholland building.

Anette Landeros, the president of the Fort Worth Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, expressed that Transwestern is keen on attracting a prominent restaurant and various retail establishments to the location. She noted ongoing communication between Transwestern and the Chamber, with discussions centered around innovative approaches to involve diverse businesses, particularly Hispanic-owned ones.

Landeros further revealed that the development, situated across from the Chamber’s headquarters, will incorporate apartments on the upper floor. Additionally, there are plans to offer some of these units at affordable rates.

The project also entails a rezoning application for a mixed-use development with high intensity. However, this aspect has raised concerns among locals, including Richard Pérez, who resides nearby and received a notice regarding an upcoming public hearing.

Pérez voiced apprehensions, particularly regarding the rezoning’s impact on neighboring properties on Commerce Street. He expressed worries about potential transformations such as converting a parking lot into a multi-story parking garage, which could alter the residential character of the area.

In response to these concerns, Landeros mentioned plans to organize a meeting where residents can directly address their apprehensions with Transwestern. She emphasized the importance of incorporating community feedback into the development process.

Pérez emphasized his willingness to engage in discussions with the developer, stressing the importance of preserving the neighborhood’s cultural and historical significance, dating back to the 1940s.

While NBC 5 reached out to Transwestern for comment, District 2 city council member Carlos Flores disclosed that the developer missed the deadline for application changes, consequently postponing the request to April’s agenda.
