3-year-old dies week after family’s Uber driver crashed when chasing hit-and-run suspect, HPD says

A tragic incident involving a hit-and-run crash has resulted in the death of a child who was hospitalized last week, according to Houston police.

Three-year-old Evelyn Medina passed away on Monday after sustaining injuries in the accident. Evelyn, along with her parents, was traveling in an Uber on March 3 when their vehicle was rear-ended by a white F-350 pickup truck driven by a possible drunk driver. The collision occurred near the I-45 North Freeway and West Road in north Houston.

Following the crash, the Uber driver began pursuing the hit-and-run suspect. Surveillance footage obtained by showed the truck attempting to flee the scene, ultimately crashing into a column and curb before heading south on the North Freeway. Meanwhile, the Uber driver collided with a traffic control box.

Medina suffered severe spinal cord injuries and was hospitalized in critical condition. Despite efforts, she was taken off life support and succumbed to her injuries.

As of now, no charges have been filed in connection with the incident. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office has been consulted, and the case will be presented to a grand jury for review.

In response to the tragedy, Uber stated, “Road safety is a critical focus for us. We have removed the driver’s access to the platform while this investigation is ongoing and will assist police however we can.”
