‘It can all be fixed’: Sean Teare discusses plans as potential Harris County DA

Sean Teare, newly elected as the Democrat for Harris County, believes he has a plan to address the county’s longstanding criminal justice challenges. With issues ranging from court backlogs to an overcrowded jail and stretched prosecutors, Teare aims to enact significant reforms.

In an interview with Eyewitness News following his victory over two-time incumbent DA Kim Ogg, Teare outlined his strategy to hold violent criminals accountable while implementing smart crime solutions. Central to his plan is an overhaul of the intake system for charging decisions, alongside deferring more misdemeanor and lower-level felony cases and retaining experienced prosecutors.

When questioned about funding for increased staff and prosecutors, Teare emphasized the need to first establish an environment conducive to retaining talent before seeking additional resources from the county. He stressed the importance of presenting real data to the commissioner’s court to justify any funding requests.

Teare also addressed his stance on reproductive rights, expressing staunch support for women’s reproductive health and opposition to anti-abortion legislation. He asserted his commitment to prioritizing resources towards prosecuting violent crimes rather than cases related to reproductive healthcare.

Despite being labeled as a progressive prosecutor, Teare affirmed his dedication to holding individuals accountable for violent crimes while offering avenues for rehabilitation. He highlighted his extensive experience prosecuting violent criminals and pledged to continue prioritizing public safety in Harris County.
