Fort Worth’s Panther Island to become a mixed-use waterfront district, plan shows

Fort Worth is unveiling its latest proposal for the much-anticipated Panther Island project, known as Vision 2.0.

Under the Vision 2.0 plan, the largely undeveloped area adjacent to downtown would be transformed into a mixed-use waterfront district, potentially featuring apartments, businesses, and hotels.

Michael Hennig, Fort Worth’s Economic Development Manager, emphasized the unique opportunity presented by Panther Island’s proximity to the city center, calling it a rare chance for significant urban development.

Initially introduced in 2003, the Panther Island and Central City plan has centered on two primary objectives: flood control and economic growth. In 2023, the US Army Corps of Engineers allocated over $400 million to construct a new bypass channel to mitigate flooding from the Trinity River, with completion expected by 2032.

The other aspect of the plan involves converting more than 380 acres of public land on Panther Island into an attractive destination, creating a vibrant waterfront district at the heart of Fort Worth.

City officials indicated that the updated vision could bring various developments to Panther Island, including high-rise apartments, hotels, office spaces, and retail establishments.

However, concerns have arisen among some community members, particularly regarding potential displacement of existing businesses and residents in neighborhoods like the Northside. Eduardo Cruz, owner of Edem Body Shop, expressed apprehension about the project’s impact on longstanding residents and businesses.

In response to these concerns, project leaders highlighted the city’s efforts to engage with stakeholders and address their input through outreach events and community meetings.

The next community meeting is scheduled for March 28 at the Rose Marine Theater.

With an estimated investment exceeding $1 billion, city leaders aim to ensure that Panther Island reflects the diversity and character of Fort Worth. Despite ongoing zoning processes, some areas of the land are already available for development.
