NFL QB Jalen Hurts covers funeral costs for North Shore student athlete Jarvon Coles, family says

In Harris County, Texas (KTRK) — The tragic passing of a beloved high school football player from the Houston area has garnered attention from the NFL, with Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts reportedly stepping in to assist with funeral expenses, as confirmed by the victim’s grandfather.

Jarvon Coles, the 18-year-old who tragically lost his life, was laid to rest on Saturday at Light of the World Christian Fellowship. The funeral service drew hundreds of mourners, paying tribute to Jarvon’s promising life, which was abruptly cut short after he was shot at a house party in Humble on March 9.

According to Braxton Coles, Jarvon’s grandfather, Jalen Hurts, a native of Houston and a former football standout at Channelview High School, reached out to the family and offered financial support to alleviate the burden of funeral expenses.

In a video message played during the service, Hurts conveyed his condolences to the Coles family, acknowledging Jarvon’s positive impact within the community.

The shooting incident occurred during a house party in the 4900 block of Fieldwick Lane, where shots were fired into the backyard from across the street. Tragically, Jarvon succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds sustained during the incident.

As the investigation into the shooting continues, the Coles family is establishing the “Crash Out for a Cause” foundation in Jarvon’s memory. The foundation aims to support local youth in achieving athletic excellence, reflecting Jarvon’s passion for sports and his football philosophy encapsulated by the phrase “crash out.”

Jarvon, described by loved ones as both a star athlete and an exceptional student, was on track to graduate with a 4.1 GPA in May and had plans to attend Lamar University.

While Jalen Hurts has not publicly commented on his gesture of support, the heartfelt act underscores the community’s unity and resilience in the face of tragedy.

Law enforcement urges anyone with information about the shooting to come forward and assist in the investigation by contacting Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477), submitting an online tip, or using the Crime Stoppers mobile app.
