Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with at the big parade downtown Saturday

Returning to Downtown Houston on Saturday morning is one of the city’s largest Hispanic celebrations, the LULAC District 8 Cinco de Mayo Parade. This lively event will feature numerous colorful vehicles and floats, with a brand-new parade route just blocks away from city hall.

will be live-streaming all the excitement and vibrant displays on Saturday at 10 a.m.

While often mistaken for Mexico’s Independence Day, Cinco de Mayo holds significant cultural importance for Mexican Americans. It commemorates the Mexican army’s triumph over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War.

Mary Ramos, who has organized the parade for 28 years, emphasizes the inclusive nature of the celebration, welcoming everyone in the community to participate and enjoy the festivities.

The parade typically attracts thousands of spectators, showcasing mariachis, elaborately decorated wagons featuring colorful papel picado, and even unique entries like dinosaurs, such as Supernova Furniture’s award-winning float from last year.

The event has experienced remarkable growth over the years, mirroring the expanding Latin and Hispanic communities in Houston, which now constitute 45% of the city’s population.

This year’s parade route begins at Dallas at Bagby, proceeding left on Louisiana St. from Dallas, left on Walker St. from Louisiana, left on Smith St. from Walker, and finally right on Lamar St. from Smith.
