‘I thought I was going to lose my kids’: Parents of children injured in Fort Worth drive-by shooting speak

When gunfire erupted outside Druscilla Rodriguez’s home at Miramar Apartments in Fort Worth on Wednesday evening, her instincts kicked in. Rushing to protect her children, she found her six-year-old son, Ka’deon, wounded, followed by her three-year-old daughter, Me’chelle.

“We had been sitting outside with neighbors, laughing and talking. Next thing you know, a car drove by and opened fire,” Rodriguez recounted.

Dad, Dontee Kinney, hurried home from work to the chaotic scene. Ka’deon underwent surgery to address wounds to his femur bone and right leg, with a lengthy recovery ahead that includes physical therapy.

Meanwhile, Me’chelle suffered severe injuries, including damage to her liver and the loss of her right kidney. Despite the trauma, the family is grateful both children are on the path to recovery.

The parents express bewilderment and anger towards the perpetrators, emphasizing the innocence of the children caught in the crossfire. They hope for justice and a sense of safety for their family.

The aftermath has left the children traumatized, reluctant to return home or play outside. Yet, amid the pain, the family finds solace in the resilience and positivity of their little ones.

Ka’deon’s upbeat demeanor and Me’chelle’s spirited personality offer rays of hope amidst the darkness. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to support the family through their journey of healing and relocation.
