AccuWeather predicts 2024 hurricane season could be ‘explosive,’ with possibility of 25 named storms

AccuWeather has unveiled its 2024 hurricane outlook forecast, indicating a potentially active season ahead. Meteorologists are warning of heightened activity in the Gulf of Mexico, with concerns raised about the potential for numerous named storms, hurricanes, and strong hurricanes, surpassing historical averages.

Jonathan Porter, Chief Meteorologist at AccuWeather, emphasized the significant risk posed to the Texas and Louisiana coastlines, attributing the potential for an active season to warm Gulf waters and the transition to a La Niña weather pattern.

While urging preparedness rather than panic, Porter stressed the importance of being informed and ready for potential impacts. Travis Herzog, Chief Meteorologist at, echoed concerns about the looming hurricane season, noting the observed increase in storm activity since 2017.

Although AccuWeather’s forecast presents a daunting outlook, Herzog emphasized the unpredictability of specific storm impacts on Southeast Texas. Reflecting on past forecasts versus actual storm occurrences, he highlighted the need for caution in making predictions months in advance.

Acknowledging the relatively quiet hurricane seasons in Southeast Texas post-Hurricane Harvey in 2017, Herzog pointed out the potential for heightened risk this year due to exceptionally warm Gulf waters. He underscored the importance of early preparation and planning to mitigate potential risks.

While AccuWeather has released its forecast, anticipation remains for the National Hurricane Center’s projections, expected around Memorial Day. Herzog delineated the differences between AccuWeather’s and the National Hurricane Center’s forecasts, noting the former’s detailed insights into potential impacts on the United States.

is also gearing up to provide valuable resources for families ahead of hurricane season, including a comprehensive hurricane tracking guide with preparation tips and strategies.

Overall, the message from meteorologists emphasizes the need for vigilance, preparation, and early planning to ensure readiness for the upcoming hurricane season.
