Action 13 saves family from eviction after housing assistance programs fails to send rent money

In Houston, Texas, a mother of two young children faced eviction from their cramped living space until they sought assistance from.

Josephine Perez, employed in a school cafeteria, expressed her love for her job and working with students but lamented its inadequate pay. Her family, including her two children, had been residing in a one-bedroom apartment, with Perez and her husband sleeping on the floor to ensure their children’s comfort.

Upon encountering a flyer from Chosen One Ministry, Perez applied for a housing assistance program and was approved, leading to a move into a new home in Rosenberg. Her children now have their own bedrooms, marking their heights on the door in excitement.

However, their landlord has yet to receive any payment. Despite the ministry’s certification of eligibility in December, complications arose regarding the family’s qualification, as the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs stipulated that in certain counties, a family member must have a disability to qualify for the program. Perez’s son does have a disability, prompting a re-application, but she has not received clarity on the status of their case or when they can expect financial assistance.

Consequently, the family faced eviction, leaving Perez torn between her children’s happiness and the uncertainty of their housing situation.

reached out to the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs, which confirmed that the ministry had submitted corrected paperwork on April 9, leading to the family’s approval. However, the ministry has not yet requested reimbursement for rental payments from the department. The department is actively collaborating with the ministry to resolve the matter.

The reverend at Chosen One Ministry expressed gratitude for involvement and confirmed the family’s approval. He acknowledged delays in the state’s approval process but assured that efforts were underway to rectify the situation.
