Ezekiel Elliott could return to Cowboys after team passes on running back in NFL Draft

The Dallas Cowboys opted not to select a running back in the NFL draft this year, continuing a trend of moving on from their previous starters in the position over the past two seasons. Despite this, there was considerable discussion during the draft weekend about Ezekiel Elliott, a former two-time rushing champion for the Cowboys. The attention now shifts to when Elliott might reunite with the team, having amassed 8,262 yards in seven seasons before his release in a cost-cutting move in 2022.

Owner Jerry Jones expressed positive sentiments about Elliott’s potential return, emphasizing his influence on the team. Although Jones refrained from specifics due to uncertainty about the rules, he indicated that Elliott’s impact would be beneficial.

During the draft, the Cowboys focused on addressing other needs, particularly on the offensive line, where they drafted two linemen among their top three picks. Executive vice president Stephen Jones highlighted their commitment to sticking to their draft board, which didn’t prioritize selecting a running back at the time.

The Cowboys met with Elliott and his agent before the draft, indicating continued interest in his future with the team. Despite not selecting a running back during the draft, Jerry Jones reiterated their interest in evaluating Elliott’s potential contribution.

With Tony Pollard departing in free agency after replacing Elliott in 2023, the current running back roster for Dallas comprises relatively inexperienced players. However, Coach Mike McCarthy expressed optimism about their potential and highlighted their youth and upside.

In the draft, the Cowboys also reinforced their offensive line with Oklahoma’s Tyler Guyton in the first round, emphasizing the importance of strengthening this area.

The addition of defensive end Marshawn Kneeland in the second round drew comparisons to DeMarcus Lawrence, highlighting his potential impact on the defense.

Overall, the Cowboys focused on bolstering their roster across various positions, with an emphasis on both offensive and defensive needs throughout the draft.
