Keller hosts community run for teen athlete hit by suspected drunk driver

Keller’s running community rallied together on Saturday along the trail where 14-year-old Nina Alvarez often pursued her passion. The event, held in support of Nina and her family following a tragic incident, drew heartfelt participation from locals.

On April 4, Nina was jogging through a crosswalk on Bear Creek Parkway when she was struck by a vehicle. Keller Police reported that the driver, 67-year-old Michael Mango, was intoxicated and failed to stop after hitting the Indian Springs Middle School student. Mango was arrested at the scene.

Keller High School cross country coach Justin Gretzinger shared that Nina, who was aiming to join his team, was well-known to some freshman girls on the team who were her good friends from Indian Springs.

Tragically, instead of pursuing her running aspirations, Nina is currently in intensive care with severe injuries including a brain injury and multiple fractures.

Despite the somber circumstances, the running community showed its solidarity, with over 350 participants, including members from across Keller ISD’s track and cross-country teams, coming together for a special “Run for Nina” event. Funds raised during the event were directed towards Nina’s medical expenses.

Jay Blakey, the event director, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support, acknowledging the collective effort to stand by Nina and her family during this challenging time.
