JJ Watt opens up on potential NFL return if Houston Texans ‘absolutely need it’

J.J. Watt is keeping the possibility of an NFL return open, albeit with a firm deadline: this year marks the final time he’ll entertain the idea. The former Houston Texans star, who retired following the 2022 season, shared his sentiments during his annual charity softball event in Houston.

Reflecting on his career and current priorities, Watt expressed gratitude for his 12 years in the league, emphasizing his health and family. He recounted a conversation with DeMeco Ryans, his former teammate turned Texans coach, where he offered his availability if the team ever truly needed him. However, Watt clarified that this year would be the last time he extends such an offer, citing a shift in his training regimen and priorities.

Although Watt, now 35, and Ryans were teammates in 2011, their paths have diverged since then. Ryans, now the Texans’ coach, responded to Watt’s comments with enthusiasm during the Texans’ charity golf classic, expressing readiness to call upon Watt if necessary.

Despite the Texans’ recent reinforcements in their pass-rushing department, including signings like Danielle Hunter and Denico Autry, and the emergence of promising talent like Will Anderson Jr., Watt’s offer to return remains on the table.

Throughout his illustrious career, Watt amassed numerous accolades, including Defensive Player of the Year awards and over 100 sacks during his tenure with the Texans. Since retiring, he has transitioned into roles as an NFL analyst for CBS Sports and a minority owner of English soccer club Burnley FC alongside his wife, Kealia.
