Harris County tells those affected by devastating flooding over weekend that help is on the way

Harris County officials have assured residents affected by recent storms that assistance is forthcoming as they grapple with the aftermath of flooding and evacuation orders.

As floodwaters recede, residents in areas like Kingwood are commencing cleanup efforts, including removing damaged drywall, insulation, and other soaked belongings. While water levels may subside, the presence of large debris piles serves as a stark reminder of the havoc wreaked by the storms.

Judge Lina Hidalgo, alongside other county leaders, convened on Monday to extend support to affected residents, urging them to contact 211 for assistance. Plans are underway to establish a disaster recovery center to provide in-person aid, although specifics regarding financial assistance are still being finalized.

Potential forms of aid being considered include low-interest loans, with homeowners possibly eligible for amounts exceeding $200,000 and renters for up to $40,000. However, for individuals like Scott Baumgardner, who has endured flooding three times, the urgency to address damage cannot be overstated.

Despite the promise of assistance, Baumgardner emphasized the need for swift action in drying out affected properties to prevent mold growth, underscoring the arduous task ahead for many residents.

Judge Hidalgo also emphasized the county’s commitment to debris removal from yards, although a timeline for this endeavor remains uncertain. Discussions on this matter are expected during Tuesday’s commissioner’s court meeting.

For those eager to lend a helping hand, the county is facilitating connections with relevant agencies. Interested parties are encouraged to reach out to 211 for assistance or visit a designated website for more information on how to contribute to relief efforts.
