Lewisville HS senior earns full-ride scholarship to college after immigrating to DFW

A Lewisville High School senior has secured a remarkable opportunity by earning a scholarship worth over $240,000, enabling him to attend college without financial burden. Jesus Barrios, who immigrated to the US from Venezuela just six years ago and initially faced the challenge of not knowing English, has become the first student from Lewisville ISD to be awarded a prestigious Stamps Scholarship.

The Stamps Scholarship, a merit-based program, provides full college tuition for up to 380 students across the United States and the UK, recognizing candidates for their academic achievements, leadership qualities, and aspirations to make a positive impact on the world.

Reflecting on his journey, Barrios expressed gratitude and disbelief at the realization of his dream, stating, “It hits me hard because, you know, I never thought it was possible to be honest.” Despite facing significant hurdles, including adapting to a new country and language, Barrios found solace in his passion for soccer. However, he encountered disappointment when he didn’t make the high school soccer team as a freshman.

Determined to succeed, Barrios embraced his parents’ encouragement, recognizing that his future was in his own hands. He diligently worked on learning English, excelled academically, and eventually became captain of the varsity soccer team. His resilience and leadership qualities caught the attention of his school counselors, who encouraged him to pursue scholarship opportunities.

After initially being waitlisted for the Stamps Scholarship, Barrios’s perseverance and gratitude shone through in a thank-you note to the interviewers, leading to his reinstatement in the selection process. Months later, he received the life-changing news of being awarded the scholarship, covering his tuition at Barry University in Florida for four years.

For Barrios, this scholarship represents more than just financial assistance; it symbolizes the fulfillment of the American dream. He views this opportunity as the beginning of an exciting chapter in his life, saying, “Me as an immigrant kid, it’s everything to be honest, it’s the world. And I’ll take this opportunity all the way.”
