Do you know how to protest your property taxes as deadline approaches? speaks with expert

Homeowners across Houston have likely received their property tax assessments in the mail recently, and with the deadline to protest approaching, it’s important to understand your rights.

Colton Pace, a tax consultant with Ownwell, emphasized that every homeowner has the right to appeal their assessment. The deadline for filing a protest is May 15, or 30 days from the date of receiving the appraisal notice.

Pace highlighted that reputable companies, like his own, typically only charge homeowners after successfully contesting their assessments. He cautioned against companies or individuals demanding upfront payment, even if they claim they can reduce your tax bill.

In Texas, homeowners have the option to handle the protest process themselves online, in person, or over the phone. Alternatively, they can enlist the services of a company to manage the protest on their behalf.
