Montrose man uses taekwondo skills to defend dog from pitbull

A Montrose resident recounted how his taekwondo skills came into play when a pitbull attacked his dog during a walk at the intersection of Indiana and Morse streets on May 5th.

Fred Schiller described the harrowing incident where the aggressive pitbull targeted his pet, Verve, prompting him to kick and eventually wrestle the dog to the ground to free his distressed companion.

Despite efforts by bystander Ellen Blasio to assist, she too suffered multiple bites from the attacking dog. Schiller managed to keep the pitbull subdued until its owner arrived on the scene.

The owner was eventually located by BARC (Bureau of Animal Regulation and Care) and agreed to have the dog undergo quarantine to monitor for rabies.

However, due to lack of direct evidence of the dog being off leash, the owner may not face citations from BARC.

Schiller expressed frustration at this outcome, but BARC informed him of the option to pursue legal action to have the dog declared dangerous through a justice of the peace court.
