3 Harris Co. jail guards charged 2 years after inmate allegedly beaten into coma, lawyer says

Charges have been brought forth in a case involving severe injuries sustained by an inmate at Harris County Jail two years ago.

According to a civil rights attorney speaking to on Thursday, three Harris County Jail guards are facing charges related to the brutal beating of Adael Gonzalez Garcia.

The incident occurred in November 2022, resulting in Gonzalez Garcia falling into a coma for a month due to the severity of his injuries.

While acknowledging that jail conditions need not be luxurious, Randall Kallinen, the civil rights attorney representing Gonzalez Garcia, emphasized that individuals in custody should not fear harm or death.

Gonzalez Garcia continues to suffer from frequent seizures as a result of the ordeal, with extensive injuries including a shattered skull necessitating the removal and subsequent replacement with a large plastic piece, as per Kallinen.

Although the sheriff’s office initially reported Gonzalez Garcia’s injuries as resulting from a fall from his bunk bed and later from a confrontation with a detention officer, Kallinen disputed these accounts, noting the lack of a clear narrative and absence of video evidence.

Despite the absence of public video evidence, a grand jury indicted Jimmy Poole, Ezihou Osiminbeke, and John Ziesmer, believed to be Harris County Jail guards, for their alleged involvement in the assault, according to Kallinen.

Gonzalez Garcia and his family are expected to address the charges at a news conference scheduled for Friday, marking a significant development in their pursuit of justice.

While the charges represent progress, Kallinen underscored the enduring pain and psychological trauma endured by his client, emphasizing that Gonzalez Garcia’s life has been irrevocably altered by the incident.
