How to Survive on Land and Sea wine bar to open in Second Ward

How to Survive on Land and Sea? No, it’s not the title a novel, it’s a forthcoming concept from Mike Sammons (13 Celsius, Mongoose versus Cobra, Weights + Measures) with a literary tie.

A wine bar and wine retail shop rolled into one, Sammons told Chron.com he named the Second Ward venue at 3401 Harrisburg for a 1943 outdoor survival guide by Frank C. Craighead.

“I’ve always liked the way it sounds,” Sammons said.

“It’s also the name of a poem written by my friend, Shafer Hall.”

The 2,200 square-foot space, located in the former Admiral Linens facility, features a bar top made of antique pine, plenty of natural light via large windows and antique tables and chairs.

Expect reasonably priced sips including beers, ciders and other libations.

A wine program, with a focus on vintages from Chianti and Austria, offers a rotating selection of affordable vinos by the glass and bottle.

Order your wine, drink here or take it to go. Although you may want to stick around for the charcuterie boards, cheeses, small plates and sandwiches from the kitchen.

Sammons will serve as general manager and beverage director when How to Survive on Land and Sea opens late summer.
