PETA barbecues a ‘dog’ in downtown Houston, provokes thought and disgust

Grilling hot dogs and burgers will be a big part of many Memorial Day Weekend cookouts. But PETA took barbecuing “dogs” to a new level by putting a realistic model of a canine on a grill in downtown Houston today, at Milam and Capitol.

The fake BBQ was accompanied with a banner that read, “If You Wouldn’t Eat a Dog, Why Eat a Pig?”

“When it comes to feeling pain and fear, a pig is no different from a dog, a cat, or a human,” said PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is urging anyone who’s repulsed by the prospect of chowing down on a chow chow to extend that compassion to all other animals and go vegan.”

While the demonstration was meant to be thought provoking, some found it just plain disgusting.

The Walton and Johnson Show, which airs on KPRC AM 950, even posted on its website, “Dogs are man’s best friend. Pigs are not. It’s not the same thing.”

The station added, “PETA just wants us to hate them… And it’s working.”
