Driving through Texas for Memorial Day weekend? Avoid these speed traps, obey these safety tips

For all of you hitting the roads this Memorial Day weekend: a word of warning.

Make sure to stay safe on the roads. Yes, that includes staying under the speed limit and keeping an eye out for speed traps from local and state policemen.

The most severe penalties are costly and can even include thousands of dollars in fines, loss of one’s license for years at a time and even jail time, according to to Texas Department of Transportation’s website.

Similar punishments exist for drivers exist who operate motor vehicles after consuming over the legal limit of alcohol (0.08 BAC).

The most-recent data says that Texas Department of Safety troopers issued nearly 60,000 citations and warnings during Memorial Day weekend.

Of the warnings, more than 1,000 were for seat belt and child safety restraint tickets. Troopers also conducted 372 driving while intoxicated arrests, 251 fugitive arrests and 190 felony arrests.

In order to do your part to make the roads as safe as possible this weekend, the Texas DPS offered the following tips:

  • Not drinking and driving
  • Don’t use your phone while behind the wheel
  • Make sure everyone is wearing their seat belts
  • Don’t drive tired or fatigued
  • Slow down and pull over for police, fire and emergency vehicles
  • Report any road hazards you encounter to police
