A man has been charged with in connection with a deadly 2018 shooting during a home invasion in northeast Houston.

The victim’s sister, Ronita Lexington, said she doesn’t know Ford or his motive for allegedly killing her brother. She was relieved when she learned of his new charge this week.

“There’s relief because this person can’t do more harm to anyone else,” she said, later adding, “[My brother] was a loving, caring, kind and gentle man …Nobody deserves to be viscerally murdered in their home.”

Lexington had talked to her brother throughout the day he died on Aug. 28, 2018. That morning, she dropped her two young kids off at school before visiting Breedlove at their family’s old house in the 9400 block of Allwood Street.

She said they shared a close relationship, and it was her routine to chat with him over his morning coffee. He was the only person living there at the time, she said.

Lexington was in and out of the house all day, letting Breedlove catch up with her kids and later picking up a cousin to run a few errands. She continued talking to Breedlove on the phone and in text messages until she arrived back at her house around 10 p.m. that night.

Breedlove had been concerned about the electricity in her house, and Lexington texted him to let him know her lights were working.

That was the last time she heard from her brother, she said.

Around 10:50 p.m., another family member arrived at the home to find a front window broken and Breedlove dead inside with a gunshot wound, according to Houston police.

Lexington said Breedlove enjoyed a tight-knit relationship with his family. He loved to joke and play sports with her children, and their cousins frequently visited him at his home on Allwood.

Breedlove had three children of his own: a 27-year-old daughter, a 12-year-old daughter and a 12-year-old son. He also had two grandchildren.

“He loved his family,” Lexington said. “There was nothing my brother wouldn’t do for you.”

She added that he also ran errands for the neighbors in the area, many of whom are elderly, she said.

He offered to cut their grass or pick something up for them at the grocery, she said.

“He watched out for everybody,” she said.

Ford’s next hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. June 3 in the 184th District Court in Harris County
