Collin County man gets 60 years for shooting at officers during high-speed chase in stolen car

A Collin County gang member has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for shooting at police during a high-speed chase after a carjacking in 2018, the Collin County district attorney’s office said Tuesday.

Marcus Johnson-McBryde, 23, of Allen pleaded guilty Feb. 14 to two counts of aggravated assault of a public servant and one count each of aggravated robbery, assault of a public servant, evading arrest, robbery and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, court records show.

Johnson-McBryde carjacked two people at gunpoint in the parking lot of an Allen apartment complex in July 2018. When a Plano officer found him getting onto the Bush Turnpike from North Central Expressway, Johnson-McBryde fired several shots at his squad car, authorities said.

Johnson-McBryde then led police on a pursuit — reaching 120 mph — and fired at a second officer before crashing on a Dallas North Tollway entrance ramp.

After he was taken into custody, Johnson-McBryde told officers he’d recently bonded out of jail on a robbery charge and fled because he didn’t want to go back behind bars.

While he was in jail after the July arrest, he assaulted a detention officer, authorities said.

Johnson-McBryde was on parole for assaulting a public servant at the time of the carjacking. Prosecutors told the jury about his gang connections and long criminal history, which included convictions for stealing cars and trying to rob a pregnant woman.

“Sometimes things that go without saying just need to be said, like ‘Don’t assault officers, don’t carjack innocent civilians, don’t commit new crimes while on parole, don’t rob people or businesses, and don’t shoot at police officers,’” Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis said in a writtten statement.
