Man faces murder charge after fatal shootout in east Oak Cliff, Dallas police say

A 36-year-old man faces a murder charge after a fatal shootout earlier this month in east Oak Cliff, Dallas police said Monday.

Police were called about 1:30 a.m. Sept. 10 to an apartment complex in the 3400 block of Fordham Road, south of East Illinois Avenue.

They found a man who had been shot multiple times lying on a couch. The victim, identified by police and the Dallas County medical examiner’s office as 24-year-old John Lewis Carter, was pronounced dead by Dallas Fire-Rescue.

Police arrested Deshawn Antoine Gray in connection with Carter’s death. Authorities said there was a “shootout” between Gray and the victim, and Gray had to be hospitalized.

Online records show Gray was booked into the Dallas County Jail on Sept. 14, a few days after the shooting. Jail records list charges of murder and capital murder for Gray, and police did not clarify which was correct.

Police provided no information about what led to the shooting or how they identified Gray as a suspect.
