Dallas Fire-Rescue units were called about 1:30 a.m. at the New Light Church at 9314 Elam Road, near North Prairie Creek Road, department spokesman Jason Evans said.

Firefighters could see flames coming through the roof of the church when they arrived, Evans said. About 40 firefighters responded to the scene.

The fire was extinguished around 4 a.m.

No injuries were reported, but the church was significantly damaged and had to be razed, Evans said.

Investigators determined that the fire began at the back of the church, in an addition used as a school, then went into the church’s attic before spreading to the entire building. They are still working to determine what caused the blaze, Evans said.
