Richardson conducts ground spraying after mosquito samples test positive for West Nile virus

Mosquitos found in a Richardson trap tested positive for the West Nile virus, the city stated in an announcement.

It was the city’s first positive test result of 2021.

No human cases of West Nile Virus have been reported in the city.

Ground spraying of the area was conducted on Aug. 4-5.

The first positive test result came later than normal this year, despite ample rainfall across North Texas this spring and summer, the city stated in the announcement.

Protective measures residents can take include:
  • Draining standing water around the home
  • Limiting time outside at dusk and dawn
  • Wearing long-sleeve shirts and pants
  • Applying insect repellent containing DEET or other effective repellants
