111 dogs rescued from Mesquite home, taken to North Texas shelters

More than 100 dogs were rescued from a Mesquite home last week and have been placed in area shelters, city officials announced Friday.

Mesquite’s Animal Services division found 111 small-breed dogs at the home on Thursday after receiving reports about the large number of canines there. Mesquite city code allows three dogs per home, said Maria Martinez, director of the city’s Neighborhood Services division.

The property owner surrendered the dogs to the city, and they were taken to the Mesquite animal shelter for immediate care, Martinez said. The dogs have since been spread out among more than a dozen North Texas shelters and animal rescue facilities.

“We worked with our rescue partners, and by the end of the day, all the dogs left the shelter to begin their new journey,” Martinez said in a written statement.

“This was a successful rescue event, and we could not have done it without our hard-working city staff who acted quickly and with compassion, and our animal-rescue partners.”

Contact information for the shelters that took in the dogs and information about adopting or fostering them is available on the city of Mesquite website.
