Omicron variant projections for North Texas prompt UT-Dallas to delay start of spring classes

Because of a projected surge of COVID-19 omicron cases across the area, the University of Texas at Dallas announced a delay in the start of spring classes.

The current schedule calls for moving the first day of classes at UT-Dallas from Jan. 10 to Jan. 18, the day after the observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

“Delaying the start of classes by eight days gives added time to assess the progression of the virus and will give our faculty, staff and students a bit more time to prepare if our instructional modalities need to be adjusted,” UT-Dallas president Richard C. Benson said in a Dec. 22 announcement.

When possible, staff and faculty members who are able to do so are encouraged to work remotely during the week of Jan. 3-7.

The university is also reminding all students, faculty and staff to complete the required Daily Health Check.

UT-Dallas has also established a COVID-19 dashboard to monitor reported student, faculty and staff cases.

The number of North Texas cases that require hospitalization is rising and is expected to increase in the new year, according to a study released Monday by the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

Other dates

UT-Dallas spring break dates are unchanged from March 14-20.

The last day of classes (May 5), reading day (May 6), final exams (May 7-13), and commencement exercises (May 16-18) are all a week later than previously scheduled.

The first day of the summer session will remain May 23.

More information is available on the university’s academic calendar.
