As vote totals are finalized, Dallas ISD trustee Garcia says she will ask for recount

After essentially offering a concession speech earlier this week, Dallas ISD trustee Karla Garcia told The Dallas Morning News that she plans on pursuing a recount in the District 4 race she appears to have narrowly lost.

Dallas County finished its canvass of votes on Friday afternoon, nearly a week after the May 7 municipal election, showing that two Dallas-area school elections’ results remained close.

The updated unofficial results showed that Garcia trailed challenger Camile White by 32 votes in Friday’s results, a margin that had increased by one vote over last weekend’s results. But earlier in tat day, she informed The News via text message that she was seeking a recount, noting that she wouldn’t be able to file that request “until at least Monday.”

Garcia, a first-term trustee who became the youngest elected school board member and the first Latina trustee in DISD, did not respond to further requests for comment.

State law allows a candidate to ask for a recount if the difference in votes between the petitioner and the next highest finisher is within 10% of the higher finisher or when the turnout is less than 1,000 total votes, both of which are the case for the District 4 race.

During a board briefing Thursday morning, Garcia said she was “humbled” and “honored” to have been able to serve the district, and stated that she would “respect and uphold the decision of my community to choose a representative.”

Procedures from the Texas Secretary of State’s website declare that in two-candidate races, the deadline for filing is at 5 p.m. of the second day after the canvass. If that deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, that deadline is “extended to 10 a.m. of the next business day.”

Meanwhile, margins for the Dallas College District 1 race narrows.

Catalina Garcia maintained a sizable lead over Lynn Davenport and incumbent Gretchen Minyard Williams but not enough to avoid a runoff.

The updated unofficial totals showed Davenport led Williams by 16 votes, down from 33. Earlier this week, Williams stated her intention of filing for a recount.
