Suspect fatally shot by Dallas police after officer, dog injured in Pleasant Grove gunfire

A shooting suspect was fatally shot by Dallas police after gunfire injured an officer and a police dog in Pleasant Grove early Friday, police say.

About 9:45 p.m. Thursday, officers responded to a family-violence call at a home in the 2900 block of Cypress Avenue, near Briggs Street, where they found two people had been shot. The victims were taken to the hospital and are expected to survive, according to police.

About 2:30 a.m. Friday, authorities were searching for the suspected gunman, who had run into a nearby wooded area, when he shot at an officer and his dog, police said.

The officer returned fire and struck the suspect, who died from his injuries, police said.

No additional information about the suspect was immediately available.

The officer, who was struck “at least twice,” and the police dog both suffered injuries that weren’t considered life-threatening, according to police. Police did not release the officer’s name.

The investigation is ongoing. Police said further updates, including the release of body-worn camera footage, are expected Monday.

The incident was the second fatal shooting by Dallas police this year. Officers killed 18-year-old Joey Cesar Fraire, who was wanted on a capital murder charge, in January at a west Oak Cliff apartment complex. Police shot at him about 55 times after they say he opened fire on officers, hitting one in the foot.
