Teen fatally shot, another wounded during attempted robbery, Dallas police say

A 17-year-old was fatally shot and a 16-year-old was wounded during an alleged attempted robbery near the Red Bird area of Dallas, police said.

Officers responded about 10 a.m. Wednesday to a shooting call in the 4700 block of South R.L. Thornton Freeway, near East Ledbetter Drive. Police said an investigation found the teenagers were attempting a robbery when someone shot them.

Police said the two were taken to a hospital, where the 17-year-old — identified Saturday by the Dallas County medical examiner’s office as Deaundre Stitt Jr. — died.

The 16-year-old was released from the hospital and faces an aggravated robbery charge. The juvenile’s name will not be released because of their age, police said.

The person who fired the weapon was not publicly identified and police did not say whether that person was detained or interviewed following the shooting. Police said an investigation is ongoing and that a grand jury referral would be submitted to the Dallas County district attorney’s office.
