ABC News will air the stories of Texas women denied abortions Friday. Here’s how to watch

Texas women who say their abortions were denied or delayed during medical emergencies will tell their stories on national television tonight as part of a special with ABC News anchor Diane Sawyer and senior congressional correspondent Rachel Scott.

The episode — an “Impact x Nightline” broadcast called “On the Brink” — features 18 women from 10 states with abortion bans or restrictions. The show originally premiered on Hulu in mid-December.

Since the fall of Roe v. Wade in 2022, dozens of women have come forward saying they were forced to wait until the brink of death to receive an abortion because of medical complications. Under Texas’ three overlapping abortion bans, pregnant people are only able to obtain an abortion if they have “life-threatening physical condition” or are at risk of “substantial impairment of a major bodily function.”

Twenty women sued Texas in 2023 over emergency medical exemptions to the state’s abortion bans that the plaintiffs argue are too vague. The Texas Supreme Court heard arguments in the case in November, but has yet to issue a decision.

In early December, another Texas woman, Kate Cox, sued the state for permission to terminate her pregnancy because of a lethal fetal diagnosis. The whirlwind legal battle ended only a week after the suit was filed, with Cox leaving the state to obtain her abortion and the state Supreme Court deciding that the onus of determining who qualifies for the procedure under the state bans rests solely with doctors. Simultaneously, the court said Cox did not meet the requirements to get an abortion within state lines.
