The suspect involved in an attempted robbery, who barricaded himself for hours, was found to be sleeping while SWAT negotiated, according to the Houston Police Department

In Houston, Texas, a person who barricaded himself from SWAT officers for hours was apprehended after emerging from his condo unit and informing police that he had been asleep throughout the ordeal.

The Houston Police Department reported that the individual was suspected of attempting a robbery at the Meadowridge Condominiums located in the 3900 block of Woodchase Drive, near Westpark Drive. The incident was reported at 3:21 p.m. on Monday.

According to police, the suspect allegedly tried to rob landscape workers of their trailer within the condo complex where he resides. Despite the workers’ attempts to restrain him, the suspect managed to break free, drove to his unit, and initiated the barricade, prompting the SWAT response.

During the incident, the suspect’s mother, who was also present at the residence, confronted SWAT officers and was subsequently detained for her behavior. She is anticipated to face an interference charge.

Craig Bellamy from HPD’s Tactical Operations Division noted that the suspect refused to surrender until several hours later, claiming he had been asleep. Upon apprehension, he was handcuffed and will be charged with felony theft and evading.

Although the suspect was unarmed upon surrender, police discovered a pistol inside the residence and shell casings in his vehicle.
