An area labeled an ‘eyesore’ zone in southwest Houston has accumulated trash after an illegally demolished building left the site hazardous.

In Houston, Texas, on West Bellfort Avenue, debris from a former business has accumulated for months, prompting concerns from nearby residents who consider it a hazard. The site, once occupied by an abandoned business, was demolished in November, leaving the debris exposed and uncleared.

Community member Elizabeth Lutz described the situation as an eyesore and a potential danger, noting that despite the presence of construction vehicles initially, no cleanup efforts followed. The debris, including long rebar pieces, broken glass, concrete fragments, and general trash, poses risks, particularly as it is situated in a school zone where children often pass by.

The absence of fencing around the debris site exacerbates safety concerns. Furthermore, it has been revealed that the property owners executed the demolition illegally, with no permits issued for the process. Councilwoman Abbie Kaman confirmed that the property has received multiple citations for non-compliance with regulations.

Despite the Harris County Appraisal District listing Kormex Foods as the owner, investigations by Public Works indicate otherwise. Efforts are underway to determine the current property owner, the reasons behind the unauthorized demolition, and the responsible parties.

Councilwoman Kaman is collaborating with Public Works and the Department of Neighborhoods to expedite the installation of fencing around the site for safety purposes. However, she emphasized that it remains the property owner’s responsibility, with citations issued for non-compliance. Nonetheless, swift resolution is imperative to address the concerns raised by the community.
