In Houston, Texas, a man accused of brandishing a gun at two firefighters during a medical emergency call made his initial court appearance on Monday.

Jaime Marquez, aged 23, appeared before a judge facing two charges of aggravated assault against a public servant. His bond was set at $50,000 for each charge, totaling $100,000. The judge noted Marquez’s lack of prior criminal history.

The incident unfolded at the Ashford Buena Vista Apartments on Bissonnet Street around 11 p.m. Saturday. Firefighters responded to Marquez’s apartment for a medical emergency as he experienced a seizure and appeared disoriented.

According to reports, Marquez allegedly retrieved a loaded firearm and pointed it at the responders as they attempted to assist him. In response, the firefighters purportedly jumped from a second-floor balcony to escape the perceived threat, although Marquez’s family disputes this account.

Marquez claimed he mistook the firefighters for individuals intending to harm him, expressing his fear to the police. While one responder sustained a broken scapula, both firefighters incurred bruises and cuts but have since been discharged from the hospital and are recuperating with their families.

Houston Mayor John Whitmire identified the injured firefighters as Corey Grant and Andrew Hoegsberg.

Marquez’s mother and sister, speaking exclusively to, confirmed that Marquez pointed the gun at the firefighters but contested the claim that the responders jumped from the balcony for safety. They asserted that the firefighters descended from the balcony in a manner consistent with normal behavior.

The Houston Fire Department declined to provide comment when questioned about the discrepancy.
