Houston residents express concerns about pedestrian safety following the tragic death of a woman at the intersection of Milam and Walker in downtown

The Houston Police Department is actively investigating a fatal crash that occurred on Monday afternoon, claiming the life of a woman walking through downtown.

Detectives from the HPD Vehicular Crimes Division responded to the scene at the 900 block of Milam Street near Walker following reports of a deadly crash at 12:25 p.m.

Authorities stated that a 64-year-old woman was fatally struck by a pickup truck driver while crossing onto Milam Street, approximately four blocks away from HPD headquarters.

Initial investigations suggest that the woman may have had the right of way when she was crossing the street.

The victim was rushed to the hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries, while the driver remained at the scene.

The medical examiner’s office later identified the deceased woman as Patricia Martin.

Eyewitness News interviewed individuals in downtown Houston about their perceptions of pedestrian safety. Witness Anna Garza recounted witnessing paramedics attempting to resuscitate the victim, expressing shock at the incident and voicing concerns about safety downtown.

Marcus Boutte, who navigates downtown daily for work, emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant despite pedestrian signals.

The incident adds to a series of pedestrian-related accidents in downtown Houston, including collisions near Astros games, fatalities involving pedestrians and electric scooters, and accidents with METRORail trains.
