According to reports from both the team and other sources, Jose Altuve has committed to staying with the Astros for the long term by agreeing to a 5-year, $125M extension

In a significant move for Houston Astros fans, the team has secured Jose Altuve’s presence for the foreseeable future. The Astros announced on Tuesday that the 33-year-old All-Star second baseman has agreed to a five-year contract extension, ensuring his tenure with the team until 2029.

While the exact financial details were not disclosed by the Astros, sources close to the deal revealed to ESPN’s Jeff Passan that Altuve’s new contract is valued at $125 million. The agreement includes a $15 million signing bonus, followed by annual salaries of $30 million from 2025 to 2027, and $10 million each in 2029 and 2030.

With this extension, Altuve is set to become the first second baseman in MLB history to amass $300 million in career earnings, marking a significant milestone in his career.

The Astros hailed Altuve’s commitment as making him an “Astro for life.” The extension also prevents the risk of losing the 2017 American League MVP as a free agent after the upcoming season without any compensation. Altuve was entering the final year of his current seven-year, $163.5 million deal, which he signed in 2018.

This contract extension is another highlight in Altuve’s illustrious career, which includes two World Series championships, four AL pennants, and seven consecutive AL Championship Series appearances.

Altuve’s journey to the majors is nothing short of remarkable, starting from his hometown in Venezuela, where the Astros initially rejected him during a tryout at the age of 16. Despite the setback, Altuve persisted, eventually earning a contract with the Astros in 2007, complete with a $15,000 bonus. Since his MLB debut at the age of 21 in 2011, Altuve has remained a cornerstone of the Astros’ lineup.
