Officials released body camera footage following an incident where a woman, mistaken for a burglar, was shot by deputies from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office has released body camera footage a week after deputies shot a woman they allegedly mistook for a burglar.

Responding to a reported burglary at the Pines of Woodforest Apartments in the Cloverleaf area around 2 a.m. on Feb. 3, deputies encountered a situation that escalated quickly.

The caller, Mitchell, expressed regret over reporting the suspected break-in after hearing gunshots following the deputies’ arrival.

Asst. Chief Tommy Diaz explained that deputies observed a broken window at the apartment, announced their presence, and stepped back from the entrance. However, they encountered a woman, later identified as 28-year-old Eboni Pouncy, armed and approaching the door, who turned out to be a resident, not an intruder.

The sheriff’s office released body camera footage from the two female deputies involved in the shooting. The footage captures the deputies knocking on the door, identifying themselves as law enforcement officers, and then reacting to the armed woman approaching. Multiple shots were fired, injuring Pouncy, who had forgotten her keys and broke the window herself.

Pouncy’s girlfriend, present during the incident, corroborated the events, expressing shock and fear as deputies ordered her downstairs and detained her.

Pouncy, hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds, has retained civil rights attorney Ben Crump for legal representation. Both deputies involved will be placed on leave pending an internal investigation, and the case will be reviewed by a grand jury as standard procedure for officer-involved shootings. Additionally, the Harris County District Attorney’s Office is conducting an independent investigation into the incident.
