Man dies after having seizure in Harris County Jail processing center, officials say

The Houston Police Department is conducting an investigation into the death of a man who experienced a seizure at the Harris County Jail on Wednesday, according to official sources.

Anthony Simmons, aged 32, was arrested by the Baytown Police Department on Tuesday for theft, as reported by authorities. After his arrest, Simmons was transported to the Harris County Joint Processing Center for booking regarding his misdemeanor charge.

Upon arrival at the jail around 10 a.m., Simmons was subsequently taken to Ben Taub General Hospital for medical evaluation and clearance. Following his release from the hospital on Wednesday at approximately 3:15 a.m., Simmons was returned to the county jail for processing.

Later in the evening at 9:45 p.m., Simmons requested medication for withdrawal symptoms from Harris County Jail staff. Shortly thereafter, around five minutes later, Simmons experienced an apparent seizure and received immediate medical attention from jail medical personnel.

Emergency responders from the Houston Fire Department then transported Simmons to St. Joseph Medical Center located at 1401 St. Joseph Parkway, where he was pronounced dead around 11:20 p.m.

The exact cause of Simmons’ death remains pending autopsy by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

Authorities have confirmed that the HPD Special Investigations Command is handling the investigation, as per standard protocol for in-custody deaths within the city limits.
