Dallas Animal Shelter over capacity, giving gift cards with adoptions through Sunday

Friends of Dallas Animal Services (FODAS) is incentivizing dog adoptions by offering a $50 Petco gift card to the first 75 individuals who adopt a dog from the shelter by Sunday.

This initiative aims to assist and motivate new pet owners to purchase supplies for their recently adopted pets.

Dallas Animal Services, like numerous shelters nationwide, is grappling with a significant influx of dogs. With large breed dogs comprising the majority of the shelter’s canine population, it currently operates at 139% capacity.

“We have a robust foster program with over 1,000 pets in foster homes, and our adoption rates have been consistent. However, this has not been sufficient to keep pace with the sheer volume of intake,” remarked Assistant General Manager, Sarah Sheek.

Despite receiving 161 dogs from Friday to Sunday last week, the shelter remains steadfastly committed to achieving a 90% live release rate through their BeDallas90 campaign.

During the 2019–2020 fiscal year, DAS met the 90% benchmark and anticipates making progress in the upcoming year. In January 2024, the live release rate for both dogs and cats stood at 85%.

“We are employing every possible strategy to secure positive outcomes, and we urge the community to join us this weekend in saving lives,” Sheek emphasized.

Dallas Animal Services’ adoption and foster programs are accessible to the public at 1818 North Westmoreland Road.

The shelter operates from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 1 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
