Clock ticking to submit for DART Student Art Contest

The art projects undertaken by students at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts serve a dual purpose: they are not merely class assignments but also cater to a specific client.

“We are creating something that embodies DART’s mission across 13 cities,” remarked Tuli Rice, a freshman at Booker T. Washington H.S. “This adds a bit of pressure because I want to accurately represent those areas.”

The annual DART Student Art Contest attracts submissions from elementary to high school students throughout the DFW area.

“It teaches them how to collaborate with the client,” explained Kyle Clark, Director of the Visual Arts Conservatory at Booker T. Washington. “Winning the Best of Show overall prize would be a valuable addition to their resume, not to mention the $2,000 grand prize!”

Booker T. Washington H.S. students have previously clinched the Best of Show title twice and secured placements in their respective age categories.

This year’s theme, “Explore DART’s 13 Cities,” poses an intriguing challenge.

“We’re tasked with finding references for all 13 cities and incorporating them onto one page,” mentioned Ronin Mendoza, a freshman at Booker T. Washington.

“The bridge, Reunion Tower, and other landmarks,” added Clark. “When students see these, they connect with them and their hometown.”

“I feel a mix of excitement and nervousness,” admitted Rice, envisioning the possibility of winning. “I’ll keep working on it until it feels right and satisfies me.”
