Grapevine HS students work in area pharmacies training to become certified pharmacy techs

Nestled in a quiet strip mall corner off Northwest Highway is Grapevine Pharmacy, a longstanding family-owned establishment that has recently taken on an additional role as a high school classroom.

Students from Grapevine High School’s Career & Technical Education program frequent this pharmacy, as well as others across Grapevine-Colleyville ISD, to gain firsthand experience in the operations of a pharmacy technician.

Roberto Ramirez, a senior at Grapevine High School aspiring to become a doctor, finds the coursework challenging yet fulfilling. He enrolled in these classes not only to deepen his understanding of medicine but also to acquire practical skills as a pharmacy technician to support himself during medical school.

Kristi Mordhorst, the mastermind behind the program, is deeply invested in its success. She spearheaded the initiative, garnered participation from local pharmacies, and actively engages with her students behind the pharmacy counter.

“I feel like I’ve poured my heart into it for the last year,” Mordhorst expressed passionately. She believes in leading by example and emphasizes her commitment to learning alongside her students.

In the classroom, Mordhorst covers various medications, including DEA regulations, and facilitates discussions on real-world experiences. By the time students graduate from Grapevine High, most are certified and well-prepared to enter the workforce.

Emilee Jones, another student in the program, shares her excitement about wearing scrubs and the anticipation of her future in healthcare. She plans to pursue nursing at the University of Arkansas, viewing it as a stepping stone toward potentially becoming a pediatrician.

Regardless of their chosen paths, students feel equipped and grateful for their teacher’s guidance. Mordhorst’s innovative approach has empowered them to embrace learning and growth together, fostering a sense of readiness for whatever lies ahead.
