No. 1 Houston Cougars’ road to automatic entry into March Madness tips off vs. TCU on Thursday

The Houston Cougars are gearing up for their participation in the Big 12 Conference men’s basketball tournament, which began with two days of games already underway. As the No. 1 ranked team in the nation and competing in one of college basketball’s toughest conferences, the Cougars are poised to make a significant impact.

Led by head coach Kelvin Sampson, the Cougars will need to secure three consecutive victories in three days to clinch the tournament championship and secure an automatic bid into March Madness. This could potentially elevate their chances of becoming the No. 1 overall seed in the 68-team tournament.

Their first opponent on this journey is the TCU Horned Frogs, a team that holds the distinction of defeating the 28-win Houston squad earlier in the season. Head coach Jamie Dixon’s team advanced to the quarterfinals of the Big 12 tournament after a notable victory over the Oklahoma Sooners.

In their previous encounter, TCU secured a narrow victory over Houston with a decisive layup by forward Emanuel Miller in the final seconds of the game. However, with the Cougars now boasting an impressive 28-3 record compared to TCU’s 21-11, Houston seeks redemption in the upcoming matchup at the T-Mobile Center.

The game between Houston and TCU will be broadcast on ABC13’s sister network, ESPN2, at 2 p.m. on Thursday. The winner of this matchup will advance to face the winner of the BYU-Texas Tech game in the semifinals on Friday. The championship game of the Big 12 tournament is scheduled for Saturday at 5 p.m. on ESPN.

Following the tournament, Houston will await their NCAA tournament seeding, which will be revealed on Selection Sunday. ESPN’s Bracketology forecasts the Coogs as potential No. 1 seeds in the South Region, where the Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight rounds will take place in Dallas.
