Great-grandmother fights back against alleged carjacker outside N. Harris Co. store, family says

In Houston, Texas, an 83-year-old great-grandmother became the victim of a violent carjacking outside a grocery store in the Aldine area on Thursday morning.

Lydia Sanchez, now out of the hospital, is nursing a badly swollen knee, split lip, and sore rib cage as a result of the attack.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred as she was leaving the La Michoacana on Aldine Mail Route around 8 a.m. Her son stated that she put up a fight, even biting the assailant during the altercation.

Despite her resistance, the suspect managed to pull her out of her car and threw her to the ground before driving off in her vehicle. Sanchez’s purse, containing a significant amount of cash, was left behind.

“Why would someone attack an elderly person like that? She’s 83 years old and was just doing her grocery shopping,” expressed her daughter, Evelyn Garza, emphasizing the need for the assailant to be apprehended.

Surveillance footage captured the suspect’s actions after the carjacking. He drove to a nearby shopping center, parked behind Manny’s Mexican Grill and Seafood Restaurant on E. Mount Houston, interacted with a delivery driver, and attempted to access the door handle of the restaurant’s truck. Subsequently, he walked away carrying a bag and abandoned Sanchez’s stolen vehicle.

Although Sanchez’s car was returned to her driveway by Thursday afternoon, the emotional toll on her remains significant.

“We need to focus on her recovery,” her son stated, emphasizing the family’s concern for her well-being.

Sanchez’s husband and children are deeply disturbed by the violence inflicted upon her, emphasizing the urgency of finding the perpetrator.

“We urge anyone with information to contact the Harris County Sheriff’s Office or Crime Stoppers,” Garza appealed.

Anyone with relevant information about the carjacker is encouraged to reach out to authorities at 713-222-TIPS.
