How will Israel respond after Iran drone attack? US leaders urging restraint

Israel is promising a response following an unprecedented aerial attack from Iran over the weekend.

Iran launched hundreds of missiles and drones towards Israel on Saturday, in retaliation for Israel’s bombing of an Iranian consulate in Syria earlier in the month.

As Israel considers the severity of its response, U.S. leaders are cautioning against actions that could further destabilize the Middle East.

Explosions were heard and seen in the skies over Jerusalem as the Iron Dome defense system intercepted a drone attack from Iran, marking Iran’s first direct assault on Israel.

President Joe Biden is advocating for restraint as Israel deliberates its response to the wave of over 300 drones and missiles launched into its airspace.

The majority of the attacks were thwarted by Israeli, U.S., and other allied forces, resulting in no casualties. However, a seven-year-old girl was critically injured by shrapnel.

President Biden discussed the situation with members of the G7, emphasizing the pursuit of a diplomatic solution.

“We do not seek a war with Iran; we’re not seeking escalation,” stated John Kirby, spokesperson for the National Security Council. “We will continue to assist Israel in defending itself.”

During his conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Biden assured that the U.S. would not participate in any retaliatory measures against Iran.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog addressed the attack, affirming that Israel values its partnerships and is evaluating all available options to safeguard its people.

Following the weekend’s events, some Republican lawmakers have criticized the Biden Administration for allegedly emboldening Iran.

Iran has declared the matter resolved, characterizing its attacks as revenge for an airstrike on the Iranian embassy compound in Syria that resulted in casualties.

Despite no direct attacks on U.S. forces, President Biden reiterated America’s vigilance against all threats.
