Houston parents charged in connection to twin baby girls’ death Oct. 2023 death, documents say

A man and a woman have been charged in connection with the tragic deaths of twin infants in October 2023, according to court documents.

Angelina Belinda Calderon and Fernando Vega, both 21 years old, face two counts each of injury to a child-serious bodily injury.

Houston Police Department officers responded to a residence in the 2100 block of Linden Creek Lane after relatives discovered the unresponsive infants, identified as Massail and Mirena Vega, on October 4, 2023.

According to documents, Vega, the children’s father, found them unconscious in their crib and attempted CPR while on the phone with dispatch, but unfortunately, the premature twins did not survive.

In a police interview, Vega mentioned that the twins had been “fussy” throughout the night and were placed in a bassinet where they fell asleep. Calderon, the children’s mother, stated that she saw them the next day but didn’t disturb them as she was heading to work.

Upon returning home from dropping Calderon off at work, Vega discovered the tragic scene.

The infants were found on the sofa with discolored skin and numerous bruises and contusions, with one child suffering multiple fractures.

An autopsy revealed that the children succumbed to multiple injuries caused by blunt force trauma. Additionally, it was discovered that the twins had not received medical check-ups since leaving the hospital, despite being sick.

Following further investigation, both Calderon and Vega were identified as suspects and subsequently arrested on April 19 without incident.

While Calderon’s sister vouched for her parenting skills, stating she was at work when the incident occurred, family members also alleged domestic abuse by Vega towards Calderon. Court documents showed a recent arrest for restraining her unlawfully.

Although Calderon’s aunt denied her physically harming the children, she acknowledged that Calderon should be held accountable for other neglectful actions uncovered during the investigation.

Police reported that the twins were malnourished and had sustained injuries that were days or even weeks old.
