In a crucial Week 4 showdown against an in-state rival, the Houston Roughnecks dominated the Arlington Renegades with a 17-9 victory at Rice Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
This win marks a significant milestone for Roughnecks fans, who can now celebrate Houston’s first victory of the season after a challenging 0-3 start.
Improving their record to 1-3 in the United Football League this season, Houston displayed resilience and determination on the field.
The game began with Renegades kicker Jonathan Garibay securing an early 3-0 lead for Arlington with a 31-yard field goal in the first quarter. However, Roughnecks kicker J.J. Molson quickly leveled the score to 3-3 with a successful 25-yard field goal attempt.
Houston seized control in the second quarter when quarterback Reid Sinnett connected with wide receiver Emmanuel Butler for a three-yard touchdown, putting the Roughnecks ahead 9-3. A successful two-point conversion pass from Sinnett to tight end Braedon Bowman extended Houston’s lead to 11-3.
The Roughnecks further solidified their dominance in the third quarter, with running back Mark Thompson scoring a 10-yard touchdown run, bringing the score to 17-3. Although Renegades quarterback Luis Perez managed to narrow the gap with a seven-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Deontay Burnett, Houston maintained their lead at 17-9.
Sinnett’s performance was instrumental in Houston’s victory, completing 18-of-28 pass attempts for 191 yards and one touchdown.
Looking ahead, the Roughnecks aim to defend their home turf against the Birmingham Stallions in Week 5 on Saturday, April 27, at 6 p.m. The team’s remaining schedule includes matchups against various opponents, culminating in a showdown with the Memphis Showboats on Sunday, June 2, at 6 p.m.
