Shooting at high school prom afterparty in Fort Worth leaves 1 dead, 2 injured

A tragic incident unfolded at a high school prom afterparty in Fort Worth overnight, resulting in the death of a young man and the injury of two others by gunfire.

According to Fort Worth Police, the shooting occurred at a residence near 3900 Singleleaf Lane around 1 a.m. on Sunday. Although officers initially couldn’t locate the victims, they continued their investigation and interviewed witnesses.

Shortly after 1:15 a.m., two individuals arrived at John Peter Smith Hospital in a private vehicle, having sustained gunshot wounds. They were admitted and are currently in stable condition.

A third victim, identified as 19-year-old Daniel Olalde Moreno, arrived at Harris Southwest Hospital around 2:15 a.m. with apparent gunshot wounds. Initially in critical condition, Moreno was airlifted to John Peter Smith Hospital and placed in the intensive care unit. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away at 1:21 p.m. on Sunday.

Eric Tatum, a resident in the area, recounted the harrowing experience of hearing gunshots and witnessing the chaos unfold. His home bore the physical reminder of the incident, with a bullet having pierced through his garage door.

The homeowner, whose son attends Arlington Heights High School, revealed that the gathering was a prom afterparty. However, the event spiraled out of control when hundreds of uninvited guests arrived, leading to a confrontation over a dice game.

Following the gunfire, witnesses described scenes of panic as teens fled the area.

As Fort Worth Police continue their search for the perpetrator, residents like Tatum express concern for the safety of their community and offer condolences to the victims and their families. The impact of such violence extends beyond the immediate victims, affecting families, friends, and even bystanders who are deeply affected by the tragedy.

NBC 5 has reached out to the Fort Worth Police Department for further information on the victims, pending a response.
